When is the Right Time to Add Options to Your New Home in NJ?

If you’re planning to build a new home in Hillsborough, you not only have your choice of a variety of floor plans (we offer six spectacular floor plans at Country Classics at Hillsborough), but you also have a wide variety of options to make your new home better fit your family’s needs and tastes.

Those options include features such as skylights, tray ceilings, island overhangs in the kitchen and doors for the living room and dining room. In some cases, you may opt for larger room sizes, a three-car garage or an enlarged kitchen with a morning room. You might even want to include a guest suite or a princess suite.

The question new home buyers face is: when does it make the most sense to choose these options?  Is it best to add these options when you’re building—or to wait to see how your needs change?

There are two main reasons why choosing your options up front makes sense. The first is financial. Frankly, it’s less expensive to build options in from the beginning. It takes less time for the builder to include the options from the get-go, and labor time equals money. Beyond that, if you’re talking extending the size of a room, it’s much cheaper to do it from the start than to have to come back and add on—especially if there is foundation work to be done. On top of that, you can enjoy the benefit of some economies of scale when your builder is ordering materials up front.

Another reason to add your options in the beginning instead of later is that it’s a much less invasive process. Remodeling or adding an addition can really disrupt your family’s lifestyle.  Plus, you don’t have to wait to enjoy the benefits that these options offer.

So as you review floor plans for a potential home in Hillborough—or at Fox Brook in Montgomery—think carefully about your current needs and your future desires. It may cost you a bit more at the outset to add the options you’ll want, but the expense will be considerably less now than it would be a few years down the road—both in terms of money and convenience.
