Life around Hillsborough Township is great. In addition to being one of New Jersey’s safest communities, it’s also home to some of the best schools in the state.
There’s a lot to do around Hillsborough as well. The 4,000-acre Sourland Mountain Preserve is an undisturbed natural setting, owned and run by the Somerset County Park Commission. Located at the northeast corner of the Sourland Region, the Preserve offers hiking, mountain biking, bouldering, horseback riding, and bird watching. As a matter of fact, the Sourlands is a birder’s paradise, known for its nesting birds including the Summer Tanager, Winter Wren, and Black-capped and Carolina Chickadees.
Even if bird watching isn’t your thing, you can still find plenty of solitude and space to simply enjoy Nature. The main feature of the preserve is its 5-mile Ridge Trail, which is great for both hiking and off-road biking. A complete circuit of the Ridge Trail (for an experienced hiker) takes about 2 ½ hours. But there are also shorter trails if you’re a beginner (or have smaller children) and just want to give it a whirl to see what it’s like.
The Park Commission supplies trail maps in the map box just off the parking lot.
