Saturday and Sunday 5-Star Shameless Name Dropping Tour of Princeton

This interesting tour focuses on the history of Princeton University and the former homes of notable Princeton residents. The two-hour tour starts at 1 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays in the spring and early summer and covers three miles. During your walk, you’ll learn about pivotal moments in the University’s history and see where Albert Einstein, T.S. Eliot, Grover Cleveland and other historical figures once lived. The tour costs $25 for adults and $20 for children.
Colonial Park Gardens
Franklin Township, NJ
The annual Rose Day Festival celebrates this quintessential summer flower. Held in the park’s Rudolf W. van der Goot Rose Garden, the festival features tours of the rose garden, musical performances, artisans and a variety of food trucks. If you’ve been looking for a small rose bush for your balcony’s container garden, you’ll want to visit the plant sale before you leave. Admission is free, although donations are welcomed.
Summer Solstice Jazz and Wine Festival

There’s no better way to celebrate the beginning of summer than with a glass of wine and a few jazz classics. The Summer Solstice Jazz and Wine Festival starts at 6 p.m. in the Roy DeBoer Evergreen Garden. Attendees are encouraged to bring picnic baskets and purchase a glass of wine from Unionville Vineyards. If you’re a member of the Rutgers Gardens, you won’t have to pay a fee to enjoy the festival. Non-members will be charged a $5 admission fee.
Independence Day Family Festival and Fireworks
North Branch Park
Bridgewater, NJ
Whether you want to spend the whole day at North Branch Park on the 4th or just stop by for the fireworks, the location couldn’t be more convenient. The Independence Day Family Festival features food, music and entertainment. A historical reenactment of life in a Revolutionary War encampment is particularly popular with the crowd. Although the fireworks don’t start until around 9:30, you’ll want to arrive early to get a great spot.
Plays-in-the-Park
Edison, NJ
Take in a local production of West Side Story at Plays-in-the-Park, located one block south of the Menlo Park Mall in Edison. The theater company performs Broadway-style musicals at the open-air theater every summer. Show are held Monday through Saturday and begin at 8 p.m., although tickets go on sale at 5:30 p.m. on the day of performance. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for senior citizens, cash only. If you plan to attend a performance, be sure to bring a chair.
North Branch Park, Bridgewater, NJ
The annual Somerset County NJ 4-H Fair is the perfect event for animal lovers. 4-H members show off their dogs, cows, horses, goats, rabbits, chickens and other animals in exhibits, shows and competitions. After you visit the animal areas, you’ll want to check out some of the other interesting exhibits and activities, including hay rides, story telling, magic shows, music acts, go-kart races and of course, delicious food options. Unlike other fairs, there are no parking or admissions fees at the 4-H Fair.
TD Bank Ballpark

If it wouldn’t be summer without a trip to the ball park, you’ll want to make room in your schedule for a Somerset Patriots baseball game. The home team sluggers battle minor league teams from Connecticut through Texas at their 6,100-seat stadium, conveniently located in Bridgewater. Special promotions and theme nights are held throughout the season. Love Star Wars? Your favorite costumed characters from the movie series will be at the ballpark at Stars Wars Night on Monday, August 7. If you wear a Star Wars costume, you’ll receive a $2 ticket discount. Ticket prices range from $9 for lawn seating to $25 for suite tickets.
